Choosing the best photographer in Pueblo Colorado
We see it all the time. Someone on Facebook posts “I am looking for the best photographer for BLANK”. Within minutes the post has several recommendations for what people say is “the best photographer”.
As photographers, we immediately start checking out the competition and see who is being recommended. We often times see the usual names, many of whom we know and agree that they would be a good fit. Sometimes our name pops up and we feel like we would be a good fit. Then sometimes, we see someone pop up we have not seen or heard of before.
We click on their name or business page link and if we are being honest, often times, the photos are just not good. Not good from a technical stance I should say. The light is really bad, the coloring of the photo is too blue or too orange giving the clients a sick look or the photographer was trying to give their image summer vibes and just cranked the slider all the way to yellow. Technically, they are NOT good photos. Yet, regardless of how bad the image is edited or lighted, the clients they get say things like “best photographer ever” or “I am so happy with my photos”.
What makes a photographer the best?
There are a few ways to look at what makes a photographer the best. Actually there are probably 100’s of reasons that makes a photographer “The best”.
They have the most followers on social media. There is an argument that could be had that the best photographer is the one with the most followers. We are not them.
The one with the most Google Reviews. Go to google, type in “photographers in my town” and filter it by the one that has the most reviews. Are they the best? We are not them in our city.
The photographer that has the cheapest prices? The photographer that has the cheapest prices means they can serve the greatest number of clients. Are they the best? Also, we are not these photographers
The photographer who wins all the awards? Most cities have “best of” contests for their city. The top businesses in the area as voted by the community. Are these the best photographers? We personally get a chuckle each year when our town does the votes for “Best of”. We often times make it in the top 5 but for whatever reason, when the results come out, the person who wins is not who we expect. It is not us, or any of the other top names in the community. It is some random photographer that none of us have heard of who usually has no website, no reviews and maybe 100 followers on social media. Our city has deemed them “best photographers”… but how. Usually it comes down to the business that pays for the votes or the ad space. A new photographer will often get nominated, get reached out too by the city, offered an ad to “help them”, they pay for the ad and boom. They are now the best photographer in town… But are they really? Well this is not us. We never won the award.
So who is the best photographer?
Well, honestly this is a pretty easy to answer question. The best photographer is the one who the clients picks, that fits in their budget that they are happy with the photos. Yeah.. If you book a photographer for $50, they show up, take your photos and you are happy with those photos THEY are the best photographer FOR YOU! This is really hard to say or to write because as photographers we critique the work from a technical standard, but clients critique the photographer on an entirely different set of rules. Rules that no photographer could possibly know because every client is different.
A recent experience for us
We just recently shot a college graduate. She booked us because she found us on Google, we had good reviews and we had a package that was in her budget. During the session, we were doing our thing, taking amazing photos, and we showed her the back of the camera on a couple of them. Keep in mind these photos were not edited yet and she did not know our vision for how they would look. She saw herself, smiled and said she loved the photos and couldn’t wait for them. But that is not all. At the end of her session we asked her how her experience was. She immediately told us how we made her “feel”. “You made me feel like a queen”. “I was nervous and you boosted my confidence”. These were just a few things she told us. Keep in mind, she had not seen a single edited photo yet. She was basing our abilities off a couple small images on the back of the screen and the rest was how we made her feel. For her, we were THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHERS.
Now, we do like to toot our own horn and we are pretty amazing photographers, but in that moment she didn’t care about the photos. She knew the photos would probably look amazing because she saw our work on Google and social media but the way she looked at herself and felt about herself after the session was more valuable than the photos.
These are the moments that matter to us. We know we are amazing photographers. We know we are amazing at editing photos. Most people book us because of these two things. But the moments that truly matter is how our clients feel at the end of their session. We work hard to show our clients their true beauty. We find out what makes them special and unique and we lean into this for the sessions. We teach them how to pose, how to smile, how to walk. We ask questions that make them think about their purpose in life. We call our sessions “therapy” sometimes because our clients may cry, they may laugh, they may share something they don’t normally share.
