Importance of a Mood Board

Today, I would like to talk about a Mood Board and what role it plays in your session with Lepik Photography.

What is a Mood Board?
Essentially a Mood Board is a digital gallery that you create using photos on the internet that peak your interest in regards to your session.

We enjoy using Pinterest to create Mood Boards as Pinterest has millions of great photos online to match any session and style.

How to create a Mood Board
The simplest way we have found is you open up Pinterest and make a new board. Now search for photos that apply to your event. If you are looking for high school senior portraits then you are going to type exactly that into the search followed by “male” or “female”. This provides you with tons of photos to fit that search. Now you just select a few photos that appeal to you. Maybe you like the light in one photo, or you like the pose of another. Maybe the outfit is something that catches your eye.

We usually have our clients find 10-20 images that appeal to them and add a little note of why they liked the photo.
Doing this helps with two things.

Number 1: It helps get you in the mindset of the session. If you see two or three outfits you really like this helps you determine your outfits for the session. It preps your mind for the session that is coming.
Number 2: It helps us determine location, time of session, outfits, posing and editing process. If all your photos are of portraits at sunset, then we know you probably want your session at sunset. If your mood board is all photos in a field or with nature, we probably don’t want to shoot your session in a cityscape. Mood Boards help us learn about what you like and want in a photo.

Will you recreate all the photos from my Mood Board?
This is a great question and one we are often asked. The answer is yes… to an extent. If there are a couple photos in your mood board you absolutely want to recreate we can work to do so, however the idea of a mood board is to get an idea of what you want and then to add our style to that. After all you came to us because you like what we are able to create and enjoy our photos. We try really hard to not directly copy other photographers work. We want to add our spin to your session and make your photos one of a kind.

Alright, these are the reason we love Mood Boards and you should too. If you have any other questions please reach out to us. If you are ready to start creating your mood board hop on over to pinterest and start adding. Once completed, share them with our Pinterest Account (link below).
