The Sea Captain

While out and about at a local antique store Kristan and I came across these vintage flashlights. Unsure if they would turn on, we picked up a very expensive $15 6V battery and headed back to the antique store. To our happy surprise both of them worked out great. We knew we had to come up with a fun photo session that could incorporate these. The idea came to us for “The Sea Captain”. Protector of the dock and the marina, the sea captain spends his nights ensuring no fowl play is afoot. Luckily we have a marina close to us, tons of cooler weather gear and our passion for photography. On New Years Eve, leaving behind 2023 we decided to head out to the Pueblo Reservoir. Armed with our cameras, a flash, a borrowed pipe and a fog machine, we created “The Sea Captain”.

I am really excited for these photos and we have many more in the series but don’t want to release them all at once. Passion projects like this are important to us. We have amazing clients and many of them have very fun and creative ideas for their sessions. But because they are paying clients we don’t always do everything we want to do because we are not sure the results. Sessions like this allow us to play, have fun, and experiment with new techniques. It allows us to push our gear beyond what they are designed to do to see what the final outcome will be. It helps us better prepare for the unexpected during normal sessions. Plus, it allows us to tell our stories. So often we are the ones behind the camera we don’t get to express who we are as individuals and photographers. We love creating images and want to display more in our home. Passion projects like this make photography more enjoyable for us. It allows us to spark our imaginations and push our creative juices during times when the weather is a little colder than normal. The Sea Captain is just one store we want to share using these new antique flashlights and we have at least 2 other ideas on the way.
